Status update

Hometown tomorrow. Can’t wait to get out of this “city”.
I hesitate to call Reykjavik a city, it just isn’t one…
So, I’ll be here:

Hooome.
Although the weather probably won’t be as lovely as in the picture.
I’m going to take a break from thesis/work worries this weekend. At least for a day!

Thesis status: 1000 words down. Which means I’ve finished about 1/8 of the essay…
Oh, well.

An open letter to a volcano

Dear Eyjafjallajokull,

I would really appreciate it if you could relax a little next week. Don’t you need a break?
The thing is, I need to be able to go to London on Thursday. Well, strictly speaking I don’t NEED to go there but I would like it oh so much. Plus, the hotel room we booked is non-refundable.
You could also just stop erupting… I don’t mean to hurt your feelings but people are getting really annoyed with you.
Hope you take this into consideration.

Yours sincerely,
Helga.

Cold feet

I’m sitting at my computer, trying to do a phonetics assignment that I have to hand in tomorrow, and surfing fashion blogs. My feet are cold. I don’t have any tea, which is my biggest problem at the moment.
Winter is here. And it’s not even October. This weekend was windy, rainy and there was some hail and sleet and a bit of sun in between. Typical Icelandic weather. But mainly, it was cold.
I’ want to knit some woolen socks soon and tomorrow I’m gonna stock up on tea.

Pleasures

I went for a drive around a part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula (where I come from) last weekend with my best friend and her boyfriend. Her boyfriend had never been there (shocking!) so I was in the role of a guide. And An overly enthusiastic one. “This is so beautiful!” “Don’t you love this?” “Don’t look at your iPod, look out of the window!”. I showed them some of the most beautiful places in Iceland. In my completely un-biased opinion…

See that cute little house to the left? It’s a cafe at Hellnar.  The most beautifully located coffee house I’ve ever been too (Again, in my totally un-biased opinion)
The view from the porch where we had coffee and cake:

And we found snow! By the roots of Snaefellsjokull glacier.

The book I’m listening to, Eat, pray love, has been a pleasant surprise. In fact I love it. I’ve finished the first part of the book, the “eat part” which takes place in Italy and I loved every word and just didn’t want it to stop. The way she describes the food, the language, Rome, the people, everything. Beautiful. And I can relate to her so much. I feel I know exactly what she’s talking about. This healing process.
And she makes me want to go to Rome again. I went to Rome four years ago and only stayed a week. That wasn’t nearly enough! I fell in love with the city, such an incredible place.

The tourist

Today I have the day off (and tomorrow too actually) and with most of my friends and family out of town I had to entertain myself alone. So I decided to be a tourist in Reykjavik. The weather is great so I jumped on my bike and headed downtown. There I went to two museums I have never been to, visited the biggest church in Iceland, walked around, had coffee and enjoyed the weather. A lovely day.

I liked the house as much as the sculptures. It’s old and beautiful and designed by the sculptor himself.
The other place I went to was the national gallery of Iceland. Interesting too. And actually quite funny that I’ve never been to either of these places.
It was fun being a tourist. At work I so often envy the tourists that come by. I love walking around a new place with a map in hand discovering new places. I didn’t need a map today but I certainly saw something new! 🙂 And maybe, maybe I will be a real tourist in September…

Camping trip

Nice weather, beautiful country, awesome friends, lots of laughing. Fun!

We stuffed the Volvo. There was almost no room for us! We picnicked. Put up our tent at a beautiful place. We played cards. Attempted to grill some hot dogs. Failed at grilling hot dogs… Boiled hot dogs.

A night in July

I know I’ve said it before but I have to say it again… Icelandic summer evenings and nights are the best. Right now the weather is amazing, it has been a lovely day. It is almost 1 am and it’s bright outside. I just came in from a walk downtown with friends.  But I have to go to sleep now! Have to be at work in about 7 hours! It seems kind of a waste spending this night sleeping!
